How can I tell if a Taobao seller is reliable?
Ignore the sales count — it is the easiest number on the page to inflate. What actually holds up is four things: the shop’s three service scores measured against its own industry, the follow-up reviews left months after purchase, how long the shop has been trading, and whether buyer protection is attached to the listing. All four take about five minutes to check.
Why the obvious signals mislead you
| Signal | Why people trust it | What is wrong with it |
| Sales count | Big number looks like social proof | It is the single most manipulated figure on the page, and it says nothing about what arrived |
| Five-star reviews | Everyone looks happy | First reviews are solicited, incentivised, or defaulted by the system when nobody bothers to rate |
| Credit level icons | Hearts, diamonds, crowns look like a ranking | They accumulate with transaction volume, so they measure how much was sold, not how well |
| Professional photos | The listing looks premium | Images are often supplied by the manufacturer or copied from another shop entirely |
Note that last one carefully: a shop score and a positive review are not the same thing. A buyer can leave a
positive review and still rate the shop three stars on description accuracy. The scores are the honest channel; the
review text is the marketing one.
The five-minute check
- Read the three scores, and read them in context. Taobao rates every shop on description accuracy, service attitude and logistics service, each out of five, scored by buyers within fifteen days of a completed order. Next to the number the platform usually shows whether the shop is above or below the average for its category. That comparison matters more than the absolute figure, because a good score in one category can be a poor one in another.
- Filter for follow-up reviews. A first review tells you the parcel arrived. A follow-up review, posted weeks or months later, tells you whether the thing still works. Read twenty of them and check two things: whether they are spread across many months, and whether people describe using the item rather than receiving it.
- Check how long the shop has traded. A shop that has survived several years with steady scores has something to lose. A shop opened three months ago has not been tested yet, and the worst operators open, sell and disappear on exactly that cycle.
- Look at what the shop type implies. A Tmall shop is a registered company with a trademark and a significant deposit behind it, so cheating costs it far more than an individual seller. That difference matters most on expensive, branded, or food and cosmetic purchases, and matters far less on cheap everyday goods.
- Check the protection attached to the listing. Return freight cover, quality guarantees and no-reason returns within a set window turn a dispute from an argument into a process.
The one-line version: a shop that is above its category average on all three scores, has years of
trading behind it, has follow-up reviews spread over months, and carries return protection — is a shop where the
usual failure modes are already priced out.
Reading the negative reviews properly
Do not look for the absence of bad reviews. A shop with thousands of sales and no complaints at all is a shop whose
complaints were removed. Look at the shape of the complaints instead.
- What are people actually complaining about? Faulty goods is a product problem. Slow dispatch is a logistics problem. Refusing a return is a character problem. Only the third one tells you to walk away.
- Does the seller reply, and how? A seller who answers publicly, offers a remedy and does not blame the buyer is telling future customers they will be looked after. Silence, or copy-pasted deflection, tells you the opposite.
- Are the complaints recent? A shop that was bad two years ago and good now is a different shop from one that has been good for two years and bad for the last month. Trend beats average.
- Check the buyer-uploaded photos in reviews, not the listing gallery. Real buyers photograph real items in real rooms.
Signs the reviews were bought
| Sign | What it usually means |
| Many glowing reviews posted within a few days of each other | A campaign, not a customer base |
| Review text that repeats the same phrases | Written from a template |
| Buyer photos that look like studio images, or appear in other shops | Copied, not taken |
| Follow-up reviews clustered in one week | Batched to look organic |
| Scores noticeably lower than the review text suggests | Happy text, unhappy ratings — trust the ratings |
| Almost no reviews between the oldest and the most recent month | A dormant shop suddenly activated |
Test them before you trust them
Two cheap tests, both before you spend real money:
- Ask a specific question. Not “is this good”, but something only someone holding the item could answer: the exact material, whether it comes in the size you need, what is in the box, when it can actually ship. Judge three things — whether they answer the question you asked, how long it takes, and whether they try to close the sale instead of answering.
- Place a small first order. Buy one unit, or buy something cheap from the same shop, and film yourself opening it. You learn their packing, their dispatch speed and their honesty about stock, for the price of one item.
Keep everything inside the platform. If a seller asks you to continue on another messaging app or to pay
outside the checkout, they are not avoiding fees — they are removing the record you would need in a dispute. Questions,
answers, promises and payment all belong in one place.
If you are buying to resell
Two extra things matter once you are not the end user:
- Stability beats price. A supplier who is reliable at a slightly higher price is worth more than one who is cheap and inconsistent, because your cost is your customers’ complaints.
- Taobao is a retail platform. If you are buying quantity, the same goods usually exist on 1688 at wholesale pricing, where you can also check the registered company behind the shop. Taobao is for testing and small buys; 1688 is for supply.
Frequently asked questions
What are the three DSR scores and how should I read them?
Taobao's shop score has three parts: description accuracy, service attitude, and logistics service. Buyers rate each one out of five within fifteen days of a completed order, and once given a score cannot be edited or removed. Read them against the industry comparison shown next to them rather than as absolute numbers, because what counts as a good score differs between categories.
Why do follow-up reviews matter more than first reviews?
A first review can be solicited, incentivised or faked, and it usually reflects the day the parcel arrived. A follow-up review is posted later by a buyer who has actually used the item, so it reports wear, failures and after-sales behaviour. Filter for reviews with follow-up comments, read twenty of them, and check that they are spread across months rather than clustered in one week.
Is a Tmall shop safer than a normal Taobao shop?
Generally yes for higher-value purchases. Tmall requires a registered company, a trademark and a substantial deposit, so the cost of cheating is much higher than for an individual C-shop. Tmall shops do not display the old credit-level icons at all and show only the three scores. For cheap everyday items the difference matters far less.
What is the fastest way to test a seller before a real order?
Ask two or three specific questions about the exact item before ordering, then judge the answers. A good seller answers the actual question, knows their own stock and specifications, and replies within a reasonable time. A poor one sends a generic script, avoids the question, or pushes you to complete the order without answering. Then place a small first order and film yourself opening it.
Not sure whether a shop is worth your money? Send me the listing. I read the shop the way a buyer who has been burned reads it — the scores against their category, the follow-up reviews, the shop history — and if it passes, I get a sample in hand and inspect the bulk order against it before anything ships.
